Special Circumstances Before Vocational Training in Germany

Special circumstances can change access to, duration of, or funding for vocational training in Germany. Part-time training, disability, single parenthood, and changing training companies are subject to different rules and support. Retraining or a second-chance education path, however, does not automatically lead to a first vocational qualification.

Tip

First clarify which specific form of training fits your circumstances and which body decides on access or funding. Plan changes to working hours or training companies well in advance with the training provider so that the contract, funding, and childcare arrangements fit together.

Single parents

Vocational training can be combined with caring for a child when training hours, childcare places and financial support fit together. Vocational training assistance (Berufsausbildungsbeihilfe, BAB) may help reduce costs during in-company or non-company-based training; different support options apply to school-based training. Part-time training can shorten daily or weekly training hours and extend the overall duration.

Disability

For a person with a disability, the Federal Employment Agency may consider special support for in-company or non-company-based vocational training. The appropriate assistance depends on individual needs and the requirements of the relevant support scheme.

Part-time training

In-company vocational training can be agreed on a part-time basis in Germany. Daily or weekly training hours are reduced by no more than 50 percent, and the overall duration is extended accordingly. The employer and trainee agree on the arrangement together.

Career retraining

Career retraining (Umschulung) leads to a different occupation and is usually vocational requalification, not initial training for an occupation. It may take place with an employer or through an education provider and may be funded by the Federal Employment Agency or Jobcenter under certain conditions.

Change training provider

Changing training providers can allow company-based vocational training to continue if a new provider takes over the training place. In Germany, the process depends on whether the existing contract is still within its probationary period and whether you will continue in the same occupation.

Second educational path

Obtaining a school leaving qualification before vocational training can open access to occupations for which employers or schools require one. In Germany, no general school leaving qualification is legally required for company-based vocational training; employers usually set their own selection criteria.
