BAB is monthly support for certain initial in-company and external vocational training programmes, as well as for pre-vocational preparation. The Employment Agency checks eligibility and calculates the amount based on the established needs and the applicant’s own income and, where applicable, their parents’ or partner’s income. Whether having your own flat, the distance from your parents’ home, your age or your family situation is taken into account depends on your personal circumstances. BAB is generally not available for school-based vocational training; whether student BAföG is possible depends, among other things, on the type of school and other conditions. Housing benefit is often excluded if you are eligible for BAB or BAföG in principle, even if no support is actually paid. Households with members in different circumstances may be assessed differently. Apply to the Employment Agency in the month from which you need support, if possible, because BAB is generally paid no earlier than the month of application. Ask the Employment Agency about possible support from its placement budget for application costs, travel or moving before you incur those costs.
Vocational training assistance before vocational training in Germany
The Employment Agency’s vocational training assistance (Berufsausbildungsbeihilfe, BAB) can provide financial support for in-company or external vocational training if certain personal and financial conditions are met. It mainly helps with costs arising from living in your own accommodation. BAB is generally not available for school-based vocational training; depending on the type of school, student BAföG may be suitable.
Tip
Check early whether your training is organised in a company or at a school: this determines whether BAB may be available at all. If you need BAB, the month your application is received matters; applying late may mean losing support for earlier months.
