Vocational training assistance before vocational training in Germany

Under certain conditions, vocational training assistance (Berufsausbildungsbeihilfe, BAB) supports in-company or off-company vocational training when your own resources are not enough to cover living costs. Whether and how much is paid depends, among other things, on the type of training, where you live, and countable income.

Tip

If you are starting in-company or off-company training and money is tight, plan for BAB early: the application month may affect when support can begin. First check whether your type of training is eligible in principle; for school-based training, check student BAföG instead.

Eligibility

Vocational training allowance (Berufsausbildungsbeihilfe, BAB) supports company-based or external vocational training under certain conditions. Whether funding may be available depends, among other things, on the type of training, personal circumstances, and income. For school-based training, check student BAföG instead of vocational training allowance in most cases.

Definition

Funding for vocational training supports certain paths into initial vocational qualifications. Vocational training allowance (BAB) may be available for company-based or external training; different funding rules apply to school-based training.

For company-based training in Germany, vocational training allowance (BAB) may help if the training wage is not enough to cover living costs. BAB is generally not available for school-based training; depending on the type of school, student BAföG may be available instead.
