The Federal Employment Agency calculates vocational training allowance based on recognized needs and deducts your own income and, where applicable, your parents’ or partner’s income. Whether, and how much, support may be available depends, among other things, on the type of training, where you live during training, the distance from your parents’ home, and your personal circumstances. Even for initial company-based or external training, you are not automatically entitled to a specific payment. For school-based training, possible support depends on the type of school and your personal circumstances; student BAföG is not available for every school. A single person who is entitled in principle to vocational training allowance or BAföG is generally not entitled to housing benefit, even if no funding application has been made or no payment is actually received. Special checks apply to households with a mix of eligible and ineligible members. Apply to the Federal Employment Agency in the month from which you need support, if possible: vocational training allowance is generally paid no earlier than the month you apply. Before incurring additional expenses, also ask whether the placement budget can help with application costs, travel, or a move; support must be agreed with the Federal Employment Agency before the costs arise. Child benefit may continue during initial training, under certain conditions, until your 25th birthday.
Comparing funding options before vocational training in Germany
For company-based training in Germany, vocational training allowance (BAB) may help if the training wage is not enough to cover living costs. BAB is generally not available for school-based training; depending on the type of school, student BAföG may be available instead.
Tip
Plan your finances according to the type of training: vocational training allowance is the first option to check for company-based training, while student BAföG is more relevant for school-based training. A timely application and a realistic calculation of income, housing, and ongoing costs are essential.
