Vocational training allowance (BAB) is a benefit provided by the Federal Employment Agency for certain initial company-based and external training programs. Funding depends, among other things, on whether the training is recognized, whether you need to live away from home, and the amount of countable income. The Federal Employment Agency calculates need and deducts your own income and, where applicable, your parents’ or partner’s income. You are therefore not automatically entitled to the full assessed need. Vocational training allowance is generally not available for school-based training; depending on the type of school, student BAföG may be the appropriate support. The allowance is counted from the month you apply. If you need help with application costs, travel, or a move, ask the Federal Employment Agency about possible support before incurring the costs.
Definition before vocational training in Germany
Funding for vocational training supports certain paths into initial vocational qualifications. Vocational training allowance (BAB) may be available for company-based or external training; different funding rules apply to school-based training.
Tip
First check whether you are starting company-based or external training, or school-based training, because that determines the appropriate funding route. Apply early for possible vocational training allowance: applying late may cost you funding for earlier months.
