The Federal Employment Agency calculates BAB based on your personal and financial circumstances. It considers your needs and deducts your own income and, where applicable, your parents' or partner's income. Whether, and to what extent, these incomes are counted depends on the individual case; eligibility in principle does not automatically mean that you will receive the full amount. In particular, living outside your parents' household, the distance to the training venue, your age, and your family circumstances may be relevant to the calculation. The month in which the application is received is decisive for when support can begin. BAB may be available for recognized initial in-company or off-company training; it is generally not available for school-based training. Depending on the type of school and personal circumstances, student BAföG may be considered instead. Housing benefit is not a general substitute: a person living alone may be excluded if they are eligible in principle for BAB or BAföG, even if no payment is actually made. Mixed households are subject to special assessments. The placement budget, mobility grant, and other assistance each have their own requirements and should be discussed with the responsible office before costs arise.
Calculating support before vocational training in Germany
To calculate vocational training assistance (Berufsausbildungsbeihilfe, BAB), the recognized need during in-company training is compared with countable income. Your own income and your parents' or partner's income may be relevant. Housing situation, distance, and family circumstances affect which needs are taken into account.
Tip
Plan around the amount that remains after your individual assessment, not an assumed full award. Apply early and prepare information about your income, housing situation, and type of training so missing documents or a late application do not make planning harder.
