Part-time training follows the same curriculum and leads to the same vocational qualification as full-time training. The reduction in working hours must be included in the training contract or recorded in a later agreement. The employer and trainee agree how the reduced hours are distributed across the weekdays. The responsible body, such as a chamber, registers the contract and can advise on the planned duration. A part-time arrangement may help combine training with caring responsibilities, health limitations or other commitments. The training allowance is generally adjusted to reflect the reduced training hours. Vocational training assistance may be available for in-company training; support depends, among other things, on income, living arrangements and distance. School-based training follows separate rules and is generally not supported by this benefit.
Part-time vocational training in Germany
In-company vocational training can be agreed on a part-time basis in Germany. Daily or weekly training hours are reduced by no more than 50 percent, and the overall duration is extended accordingly. The employer and trainee agree on the arrangement together.
Tip
Part-time training may suit you if a full training week is difficult to combine with caring responsibilities, health or other fixed commitments. Before accepting, check whether the employer agrees to reduced hours and whether the lower allowance fits your budget.
