The main planning factors are reliable childcare, work and school hours, travel and income during training. Ask the employer, school or training provider whether part-time training is possible and how the changed training duration would affect the schedule. For training under the Vocational Training Act (Berufsbildungsgesetz), daily or weekly training hours can be reduced by no more than 50 percent by mutual agreement; the overall duration is extended accordingly. BAB may be available for recognized initial in-company or non-company-based training. The Federal Employment Agency takes into account, among other things, your own income, where applicable your parents’ or partner’s income, your living arrangements and family situation. BAB generally does not support school-based training; depending on the type of school and your circumstances, student BAföG may be an option. Apply as early as possible, because support is generally assessed from the month of application. Parents may receive child benefit while their child is in training, under certain conditions, until the child’s 25th birthday; this is a payment to the parents, not the trainee’s own training income. Also check whether local childcare options fit your training hours and how much remains in your monthly budget for childcare, travel and housing. Agree to a trial work period only if its duration, purpose, pay and accident insurance are clearly arranged.
Single parents before vocational training in Germany
Vocational training can be combined with caring for a child when training hours, childcare places and financial support fit together. Vocational training assistance (Berufsausbildungsbeihilfe, BAB) may help reduce costs during in-company or non-company-based training; different support options apply to school-based training. Part-time training can shorten daily or weekly training hours and extend the overall duration.
Tip
Make a firm training plan only once childcare and training hours fit together and the monthly costs are covered. Part-time training can create more flexibility, but it extends the training period; include that longer period in your childcare and financial plans.
