For recognition of a study abroad semester, planning starts with the host institution’s current course offerings. Subject fit, level of study, prerequisites, and the actual availability of courses must be checked together. The home institution confirms whether a planned course can be used toward a required, elective, or supplementary component. Changes after the stay begins should be coordinated and documented again according to the prescribed procedure. The planned courses are recorded in a learning agreement (Learning Agreement). After successful completion, the host institution issues an official academic record listing the courses and results. On this basis, the home institution reviews the ECTS transfer (ECTS-Transfer), meaning the transfer of credits within the European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System. It decides under its own rules which academic work will be recognized and to what extent. For grades, it may convert the results, report them unchanged, or document only passed work. A simple course confirmation does not automatically replace the required official academic record. Differences between the agreed course selection and the courses actually completed may affect recognition. The final decision of the home institution based on the submitted documentation is binding.
Recognition of a Study Abroad Semester in Switzerland
Mobility recognition transfers successfully completed academic work from abroad into the study program at the Swiss home institution. Before the stay, an agreement records the planned courses and their intended use in the study program. The agreement provides a documented basis, but it neither replaces successful course completion nor the final recognition decision.
