School in Suriname

Suriname has a nationally coordinated formal school system from preschool through secondary education. Formal preschool generally serves children aged four to five, while GLO (Gewoon Lager Onderwijs) covers eight primary school years. Public, private and faith-based schools operate within the system, with Dutch as the official school and teaching language.

Tip

Treat school choice in Suriname as an access and progression decision, not only a search for the nearest school. Compare the school stage, recognition, Dutch-language support, placement prospects, transport, total costs and later education options, especially when moving from GLO into secondary education. Confirm current registration, attendance and examination rules because the system is undergoing reform.
