BAB supports certain in-company and external vocational training programs if the personal and financial eligibility requirements are met. Age alone does not generally rule out support. Different conditions apply to people who are not German nationals, depending on their residence status; for in-company training, approval from the Federal Employment Agency may also be required for some residence permits. Living away from the parental home may be relevant to the calculation, but by itself does not establish eligibility. Support also depends on the type of training, the distance to the training location, the applicant’s own income and, where applicable, their parents’ or partner’s income. School-based training is generally not supported by BAB; depending on the type of school, student BAföG may be an option. Apply in the month from which you need support, since BAB is generally paid no earlier than the application month.
Personal eligibility before vocational training in Germany
For in-company vocational training in Germany, age, nationality, and residence may affect eligibility for vocational training assistance (Berufsausbildungsbeihilfe, BAB). The Federal Employment Agency reviews personal eligibility together with the type of training, housing situation, and income.
Tip
Apply for BAB early enough for possible support to be assessed before your desired start date. Check in particular whether your residence status and type of training qualify; living away from your parents alone is not enough.
