Vatican City State and the Holy See are distinct. Some Holy See institutions operate in or serve the Vatican City State, but their training arrangements do not create a general Vatican apprenticeship system. No local apprentice status, dual apprenticeship model, national vocational examination or general recognition and funding regime has been identified in the official structure. Borgo Laudato Si’ and the Centro di Alta Formazione Laudato Si’ provide non-formal, work-oriented learning in gardening, pruning, arboriculture, agriculture, hospitality, livestock, processing agricultural products and guided tours. Courses may be organized with partners such as Percorsi di Cittadinanza. They often focus on migrants, refugees, unemployed young people and adults, women affected by violence, people with disabilities and former prisoners. Access can involve social services, nongovernmental organizations, parishes or reception centres. A 2025 garden course provided 100 hours from Monday to Friday, 09:30 to 13:30, with required attendance. Another 2025 course lasted two months and included support for about one year. A published 2025 gastronomy and kitchen course was free. These courses may support placement with local businesses, but they do not provide an automatic job or a state-recognized qualification. The security services use institution-specific selection and training. The Pontifical Swiss Guard generally requires Swiss citizenship, male gender, practising Catholic faith, single status, age 19 to 30, a usual minimum height of 1.74 metres, an EFZ or Matura, completed Swiss military recruit school and a category B driving licence. The service commitment is at least 27 months. Basic training lasts three months and covers law, psychology, firefighting, first aid, shooting, self-protection, tactics, Italian and drill, with training in Isone and Rome or Vatican City. After three years of service, a guard may be able to pursue the Swiss federal certificate for security and protection specialists, known as FSB. That is a Swiss qualification, not a Vatican vocational certificate. The Gendarmerie Corps generally selects single men aged 21 to 24 who are healthy, practising Catholics and have a high-school qualification or equivalent; a usual minimum height of 1.78 metres is stated. It provides service-related training and further qualification, but the official duration and final qualification are not specified. The Fire Brigade generally requires single men aged 21 to 24 who are healthy, practising Catholics and have a high-school qualification or equivalent. Training takes place at the Basic Training School of firefighters of Rome. Preference may be given to applicants with fire service, civil protection or related security qualifications, while the duration, cost and final qualification are not published. The Vatican Museums offer a six-month training placement starting in October or April. Applications should normally arrive at least four months before the start and include a CV, identity document, diplomas or certificates, a motivation letter and at least two references. Basic Italian is required. The placement is unpaid, does not itself provide a qualification and does not give priority for employment. Restoration placements lasting up to six months are limited to graduates of Italian or foreign restoration schools. Employees receive workplace safety information, training and updates during working time without cost to them. This employment-based duty does not establish a general apprenticeship contract. Costs and dates depend on the institution and project; candidates for the Pontifical Swiss Guard pay for the preliminary medical examination, while costs for the Gendarmerie and Fire Brigade are not published. Informal learning through induction and service practice is common, but its completion does not automatically produce a portable occupational certificate.
Apprenticeship in Vatican City
Vatican City has no general state apprenticeship system or local vocational qualification equivalent to a national first occupational certificate. Vocational learning exists through fragmented, institution-specific courses, workplace training, internships and selective service pathways. The main functional options involve Borgo Laudato Si’, security services and the Vatican Museums.
Tip
Treat Vatican City opportunities as institution-specific learning or work-entry options, not as a general apprenticeship leading to a portable local qualification. Choose Borgo Laudato Si’ when structured practical support and possible job placement are the priority; choose a security or museum opportunity only when its strict conditions and limited employment consequences fit your plans. Obtain written confirmation of the qualification, costs, duration and employment outcome before committing time or money.
