Living in Vatican City

Vatican City is a state territory completely surrounded by Rome in the heart of Italy and is the smallest state in the world. Around 921 people live there. The densely built-up area includes St. Peter’s Basilica and other historic buildings, as well as the Vatican Gardens. The climate is Mediterranean: summers are usually hot and dry, while winters are mild and occasionally rainy. Many destinations within the city can be reached on foot; however, numerous employees commute from Rome. Daily life is shaped by ecclesiastical, cultural, and administrative duties. People live in a few buildings in a confined space, while leisure activities and errands often take place in the larger urban area of Rome.
