Apprenticeship in United States

An apprenticeship in the United States is a work-based education path. An apprentice learns a job by working with experienced people while also completing planned instruction. Many apprenticeships are sponsored by an employer, a group of employers, a labor organization, a school, or a public agency. The sponsor sets the training plan and connects the apprentice with workplaces and instructors. Apprentices usually receive wages while they learn. Pay and responsibility often increase as the apprentice gains skills and completes parts of the program. Classroom instruction may take place at a community college, technical school, training center, or workplace. Lessons can cover safety, tools, mathematics, communication, regulations, and job-specific knowledge. Important local terms include registered apprenticeship, sponsor, apprentice, mentor, journeyworker, and certificate of completion. A journeyworker is an experienced worker who can perform the occupation independently and may train others. The typical process includes choosing an occupation, finding a sponsor, applying, completing an interview or skills assessment, working under supervision, attending instruction, and showing progress through practical tasks. Apprenticeships can provide income, practical experience, professional contacts, and a recognized qualification. They may be a strong choice for people who prefer learning by doing and want to enter a career without starting with a traditional four-year degree. The limits are that programs can be selective, physically demanding, location-dependent, and focused on one occupation. Before applying, a person should compare the training plan, work conditions, progression rules, instruction schedule, and final credential.
