Unemployment in Uganda

Unemployment in Uganda means having no job, actively looking for work and being available to start. The Labour Market Survey 2025 recorded an unemployment rate of 12.2% among people aged 15 and above, with higher rates among women and young people. Uganda provides job registration, counselling and matching through Employment Services, but the reviewed current sources do not establish a general statutory unemployment insurance or unemployment benefit.

Tip

Treat the loss of work as two parallel tasks: protect any final employment-related money and start a documented job search. Check NSSF and programme eligibility separately because Uganda does not provide a general unemployment payment through these routes. Use ESMIS for free matching and counselling, but do not treat registration as a job guarantee.
