Traditions in St Vincent and Grenadines

Traditions in Saint Vincent and the Grenadines are living practices passed through families, communities, schools, performers and festival groups. They are not governed by one national registry or one uniform procedure. Some customs are informal and local, while cultural programmes and heritage projects receive formal support from the Ministry of Tourism, Civil Aviation, Sustainable Development and Culture, its Department of Culture and the National Commission for UNESCO. The Carnival Development Corporation, the SVG Tourism Authority, local tourism associations and festival committees also support public activities. The annual cycle includes New Year's and Old Year's Day observances, the Primary School Performing Arts Festival in February, National Heroes and Heritage Month in March, and National Heroes Day on 14 March. April may include Gospel Fest, the Bequia Easter Regatta and Union Island Easterval. Labour Day, the Union Island Maroon Festival, the Arrowroot Festival in northern Saint Vincent and the Canouan Regatta are associated with May. The Union Island Maroon Festival usually lasts about three days around the full moon. Vincy Mas takes place in June and July and includes steelpan, calypso, soca, mas costumes, band parades and competitions, especially on Carnival Monday and Tuesday. Emancipation Month, Emancipation Day on 1 August, the Breadfruit Festival, the National Dance Festival, Independence Month, Independence Day on 27 October and the National Drama Festival follow later in the year. December includes the National Christmas Festival and Nine Mornings from 16 to 24 December. Organizers may update exact dates and programmes each year. Nine Mornings consists of nine early mornings before Christmas. Activities can include sea baths, fetes, bicycle riding, street concerts, rural steelband jump-ups, community lighting and storytelling. Public participation is invited, and the tradition has a historical connection with a Catholic novena, although its full origin is not settled. Vincy Mas is the country's major carnival season, with music, dance, costumes, parades and competitions. Traditional carnival characters and performance figures include jab jabs, pierrots, jumbies, boosey back, robbers and bats. Music and dance traditions include steelpan, calypso, soca, gospel, folk songs, storytelling, Big Drum, Boom Drum with flute, Quadrille and Nation Dance. Big Drum and Nation Dance are especially associated with Union Island and other community heritage activities. Visitors do not need to travel to Saint Vincent solely to submit the application, subject to the current registry requirements. Traditional wedding forms remain local or family-based rather than following one nationally uniform cultural procedure. A specific wedding ceremony may also be religious. All Souls observances, grave care, remembrance, prayer and storytelling are locally practiced; burial law and religious rules are separate matters. People are not generally required to participate in traditions. Public festivals are usually open to participation, but an event may charge admission or separate fees for a fete, competition, transport, accommodation or materials. Performers and competitors follow the registration process and rules set by the relevant organizer. Organizers also determine event schedules, safety arrangements, entry conditions and competition requirements. Public holiday rules under the Public Holidays Act and formal marriage requirements create legal obligations only in their specific areas; they do not create a general duty to practise customs. Traditions in Saint Vincent and the Grenadines continue to change. The 2025 National Intangible Cultural Heritage Initiative documented or supported Cake Dancing, boat making, Indigenous Herbs and Knowledge, Boom Drum, Quadrille, Moonlight Games, traditional characters and drums, and calabash art. Its focus includes safeguarding, community participation and transmission between generations. A UNESCO project running from 2024 to 2026 supports training, consultation and island-wide mapping of living heritage. These efforts respond to concerns about the loss or over-commercialisation of practices such as Nine Mornings while allowing tourism and active community use to develop alongside them.
