People settled the islands in several waves from about 5000 years ago. UNESCO tentative-list material records about 160 ceramic sites and links them to Saladoid and Taíno cultural developments. Petroglyphs at Layou form the largest known petroglyph panel in the Lesser Antilles; the Buccament rock image, Carib Stones and jumbie rocks, together with place names and landscape use, provide evidence of long-term Indigenous connections. European contact began in the fifteenth century. Africans arrived through the colonial system and through escape from enslavement, and many formed families and alliances with Kalinago communities.
