Everyday goods are sold through supermarkets, provisiewinkels, markets, clothing and shoe shops, technology retailers and import businesses. The official SRD Check platform from EZOTI compares listed prices for 108 products at eight participating shops, but it does not represent the entire market. Official consumer price collection covers seven districts, so the available range and prices in Paramaribo, Wanica, Nickerie, Wageningen, Coronie, Saramacca, Commewijne and Para should not be treated as identical nationwide. Access in other areas can depend on transport, local supply and digital availability. Retailers must display product and service prices in Surinamese dollars under the Prijsaanduidingsbesluit. A seller may also show a foreign-currency price, but cannot require payment in a foreign currency. A small-retail receipt must be in Dutch and identify the seller, product, unit or quantity, net content or measure, total price including tax, sale date and any stated guarantee period. The seller keeps a duplicate for ten years. Keep your receipt, product details and price evidence if you need to report a problem to Consumentenzaken (CoZa); the Economische Controle Dienst (ECD) can investigate price and trading violations. Suriname has no generally verified statutory offline return right for ordinary purchases. A return or exchange therefore depends on the seller's stated policy, the contract and the condition of the goods. A guarantee applies when the seller or manufacturer states a guarantee period. For food and other prepacked goods, check the product name, manufacturer or importer, net content, ingredients, expiry date, storage instructions and origin. The Surinaams Standaarden Bureau (SSB) sets labelling requirements, including SSB 003:2013 for prepacked goods and SSB 016:2023 for food. Online sellers must be clearly identifiable under the Wet Elektronisch Rechtsverkeer (2017), Chapter 8. Before ordering, check the provider's name, address, direct contact details, KKF registration, product description, total price and extra charges, delivery, payment terms, service region, offer period, cancellation terms, applicable law and dispute process. Secure electronic payment is required, and the provider can be liable for a breach. Suriname does not have a generally verified online withdrawal right. If mandatory information is missing and you received no material benefit, you may end the agreement within 30 calendar days. Payment commonly uses SRD cash, debit or POS cards, internet banking and mobile banking. BNETS links bank debit cards to participating bank-wide ATM and POS terminals, while SNEPS provides national payment infrastructure. SNEPS Fast Payments is being introduced in stages during 2026, with targets of processing within one hour initially and within 15 minutes around the clock by the end of 2026. Treat unexpected payment links and requests for banking details as possible phishing or fraud. Imported goods can fall into prohibited or restricted, permit-required, specially treated or freely importable categories. Commercial imports require KKF registration, and documents may include an airway bill or bill of lading, invoice, origin evidence or H-03. Depending on the product, certificates may involve BOG, the Farmaceutische Inspectie or the Bureau Registratie Geneesmiddelen. Customs handles goods at ports, airports and post offices; no single import threshold or charge applies to every product. Styrofoam packaging has been prohibited since 2019. The reduction of other single-use plastics continues, but a complete current prohibition list is not consistently documented. Reusable bags, proper recycling and separate handling of plastic, electronic and chemical waste reduce disposal problems where collection services exist.
Shopping in Suriname
Shopping in Suriname takes place through supermarkets, neighborhood shops, markets, specialist stores, importers and online or messaging-based offers. Prices, product availability and delivery options can differ by district and seller. Check the price in Surinamese dollars, request a Dutch-language receipt and keep evidence of the purchase, especially for imported or online goods.
Tip
Treat shopping in Suriname as a verification task: compare the actual SRD price, confirm what the product includes and keep proof of the transaction. Use extra checks for online orders, imported goods and purchases where a return or guarantee would matter, because no general return right covers every purchase.
