The Ministry of Education, Science and Culture (MinOWC) coordinates and regulates Suriname's school system. Formal preschool is called Kleuteronderwijs and usually serves children aged four to five. GLO covers Leerjaar 1 to 8. Students normally continue into Voortgezet Onderwijs voor Junioren (VOJ), the junior secondary level, which includes MULO, LBGO, LTO and LHNO. Senior secondary education is called Voortgezet Onderwijs voor Senioren (VOS) and includes HAVO, VWO, SMO and 3-Jarig HAVO. Formal secondary school pathways with a career focus include LBO, IMEAO and NATIN; these belong to the school system when they provide a recognized secondary qualification, but they are distinct from tertiary education. Public schools are operated by the state, while private and faith-based schools also provide recognized schooling. Special education is supported through Bureau Speciaal Onderwijs and the Pedologisch Instituut. There is no reliable evidence of a single nationally standardized international-school pathway, so international schools should be checked individually for recognition, curriculum and progression options. Families can usually register children at a school of their choice during the annual registration period, commonly publicized through the media in April or May. Late registration generally takes place from August to mid-October through Bureau Basisonderwijs. AVO handles registration and placement for public secondary schools such as MULO, HAVO and VWO. Suriname has no reliably verified nationwide catchment rule for every school. When places are limited, a student may be placed outside the home area through the AB system, which can create additional transport needs. The Constitution provides for compulsory and free general primary education. The precise nationwide age and enforcement rules are subject to continuing reform, so families should verify current requirements with the responsible school or education office. Reform work under NOBS 2024-2031 and related concept laws may change attendance and school structures. Dutch is the official language of school instruction, and Surinamese Dutch is used locally. Many children grow up with other languages. Multilingual support is especially relevant in the interior, where students may move from local languages into Dutch instruction. The national curriculum framework and standards are developed through the Ontwikkelingsdienst and Curriculumontwikkeling. The curriculum emphasizes competencies, Basic Life Skills, STREAM, cultural and artistic heritage, and digital skills, while schools and districts may adapt implementation to local conditions. Rural customization and multilingual education are continuing reform priorities. Schools use formative assessment during learning and summative assessment for completed work or stages. Progress reports, grades, written and practical examinations, and study profiles can affect promotion. Examenbureau coordinates central and state examinations, and a state examination can provide a second opportunity. For example, the 2026 HAVO state examination requires at least age 15, a MULO diploma or equivalent document, six subjects and completion within a maximum of three years; the fee is SRD 150 per subject. Examination conditions and fees should be checked for the relevant year. Completion of GLO normally leads to VOJ or Leerjaar 9. A MULO diploma or equivalent document can support admission to VHN, HAVO, VWO or NATIN under the applicable procedure. VOS diplomas provide school qualifications, while entry into tertiary education depends on the admission rules of the chosen institution. German school types and qualifications do not transfer directly to Suriname's system. General primary education is constitutionally free, but there is no reliable single current fee schedule for every school type. Private and faith-based schools may charge institution-specific fees. Families may also pay for materials, transport or other services, although the state sometimes provides teaching materials, school supplies and furniture. Registration for school transport in 2025/26 included a SRD 50 administration fee. Technical Diensten manages school transport, and transport and infrastructure challenges are particularly relevant in Marowijne, Brokopondo and Sipaliwini. BOS provides information on study facilities, while guidance services, Bureau Speciaal Onderwijs and the Pedologisch Instituut support learning or disability-related needs. A 2022 school-meal pilot is documented, but current nationwide continuation has not been verified. The system contained 597 schools in 2023/24: 373 institutions serving Leerjaar 1 to 8, 163 serving Leerjaar 9 to 10 and 61 serving Leerjaar 11 to 16. The transition from primary to secondary education is a major pressure point. Participation and completion are weaker in VOJ and VOS than in primary education, with differences between districts and between coastal areas and the interior. Families should therefore compare the school's stage, recognition, language support, placement procedure, transport arrangements, total costs and progression option.
