How long does National Apprenticeship Training usually take in Solomon Islands?

The National Apprenticeship Training pathway is regulated for about four years. It combines classroom and practical training at SINU with employment-based training in an industry company.

What entry documents are required for a 2027 apprenticeship application in Solomon Islands?

The stated 2027 requirements include at least Form 5, the Solomon Islands School Certificate and a transcript. The application may also require a completed form, certified photograph, birth certificate or passport, and qualification evidence.

Which organisations provide or regulate apprenticeship training in Solomon Islands?

SINU TAFE provides institutional training, companies provide workplace learning, and Rural Training Centres or approved vocational centres provide community-based options. SITESA handles policy implementation, accreditation, quality assurance and support programmes, while MCILI and NTTT oversee occupational standards, trade testing and certification.

Can an experienced worker obtain trade certification without completing a full apprenticeship in Solomon Islands?

NTTT trade testing can assess existing occupational skills for experienced workers, apprentices and people who learned through workplace or industry practice. The result depends on the applicable trade standard and assessment process.

Does completing an apprenticeship guarantee a job in Solomon Islands?

No. A completed apprenticeship or trade certificate can improve access to employment, self-employment or further training, but the available evidence does not establish an automatic job placement.

Apprenticeship in Solomon Islands

Apprenticeship in Solomon Islands combines technical and vocational education and training (TVET) with supervised workplace learning in a specific trade. The system is developing through National Apprenticeship Training, SINU TAFE, Rural Training Centres and approved vocational providers. Pathways can lead to Certificate II, III or IV, trade certification or further skills training, but completion does not automatically guarantee a job or study place.

Solomon Islands has an established but fragmented apprenticeship and vocational training system. The Ministry of Education and Human Resources Development sets national TVET policy. The Solomon Islands Tertiary Education and Skills Authority (SITESA) supports planning, provider and course accreditation, quality assurance, the National Qualifications Framework, scholarships, grants and Rural Training Centre funding. The Ministry of Commerce, Industry, Labour and Immigration Labour Division and National Trade Training & Testing (NTTT) handle occupational standards, apprenticeship arrangements, trade testing and certification. SINU TAFE provides institutional and classroom-based training, while companies provide employment-based learning and Rural Training Centres or approved vocational centres extend access in rural and community settings. National Apprenticeship Training (NAT) combines classroom training at SINU with workplace training in an industry company. The regulated pathway usually lasts about four years. A 2027 expression-of-interest pathway identifies Building and Construction, Electrical, Plumbing and Allied Trades, Light Motor Vehicle Mechanic, Heavy Vehicle and Plant Mechanic, and Marine Engineering, with 30 places listed for each trade. The programme is expected to support SINU tuition and related training needs, while current places, dates and conditions depend on the published intake. Other formal routes include SINU TAFE competency-based programmes at Certificate II, III and IV levels. Formal Rural Training Centre pathways commonly cover Automotive Mechanic, Construction, Agribusiness, Tourism and Hospitality, and other vocational pathways, often at Certificate III level. Skillset courses at SINU provide shorter practical training for individuals, companies and organisations and may support later progression into a full certificate. Workplace or industry-based learning can also build skills informally. NTTT trade testing can assess and certify existing abilities for novices, apprentices, journeymen and experienced workers, including people who developed skills outside a formal course. Entry requirements depend on the programme. The stated 2027 NAT requirements include at least Form 5, the Solomon Islands School Certificate and a transcript. Scholarship rules differ: a SITESA Skill Development Scholarship may accept Year 11 or Form 5, a relevant completed or current technical programme, or certain combinations of Form 3 and community service or current work experience. SINU scholarships generally require the Solomon Islands National Form 6 Certificate or Form 5 together with relevant work experience. Applications can require a completed form, certified photograph, birth certificate or passport, qualification evidence and transcript; incomplete applications may not be considered. In the dual NAT model, SINU provides the classroom and related practical component, the company provides workplace training, and the state regulates the system. NTTT uses cooperation between the Labour Division, training institutions and industry. A trade test is a standardised assessment of occupational competence, while trade certification records that a person meets relevant industry standards and may support regional recognition or accreditation. Apprentice contracts, wages, working hours, termination, safety and insurance require checking against the applicable scheme and employer arrangements because a single reliable rule could not be established for all programmes. Tuition and related training needs may be supported in a NAT intake, and SITESA scholarships or grants can support approved TVET providers and students. Self-funded course fees at SINU TAFE and Rural Training Centres vary by programme, so no single national fee should be assumed. Training may improve access to employment, self-employment, further skills training or, in some cases, later study, but there is no automatic job or study placement after completion. Working adults can use Skillset courses, formal certificates or NTTT assessment to obtain a first recognised vocational qualification later in life. Current providers, approved courses, application dates and available places should be checked with SINU, SITESA and MCILI before applying.
