Educación Inicial includes a first cycle for children up to three years old and a second cycle for four-year-olds. Preescolar is generally for five-year-olds and is linked by law to entry into Educación Escolar Básica. EEB is the compulsory nine-grade basic stage. After EEB, students can enter Educación Media, which has three courses and offers a scientific or technical pathway. A completed EEB can lead to recognition as Graduado en educación escolar básica when the required learning outcomes are achieved. Successful completion of EM leads to a bachiller title after positive assessment in all subjects set by the Ministerio de Educación y Ciencias, known as the MEC. This qualification can support immediate transition to higher vocational training or university, which are outside school education.
School in Paraguay
School education in Paraguay runs from Educación Inicial and Preescolar through Educación Escolar Básica (EEB) and Educación Media (EM). EEB covers nine grades in three cycles, while EM lasts three years and leads to a Bachillerato Científico or Bachillerato Técnico. EEB attendance is compulsory, and public schools provide the covered school stages without tuition under Paraguayan law. Schools may be public, private, privately subsidized, urban, rural, Indigenous or inclusive.
Tip
Choose a school in Paraguay by matching the child’s stage, language, location, support needs and intended upper-secondary pathway. Compare the real costs and enrollment conditions of public, private and privately subsidized schools instead of assuming that the nearest school, a low fee or a familiar school type will automatically be the best fit. Keep written confirmation of enrollment, language, support arrangements and the qualification the school can issue.
