Politics in Luxembourg

Politics in Luxembourg concerns how public authority is organized, exercised and renewed through institutions and elections. Luxembourg is a parliamentary democracy and constitutional monarchy in which the Constitution protects fundamental rights, the rule of law and the separation of powers. The political system operates at national, European and communal levels.

Tip

Classify a political question in Luxembourg by level before choosing where to act: national, European or communal. Match the matter to the relevant institution or elected representation, because local procedures do not replace national or European ones. For an election-related action, verify the applicable eligibility, registration, postal voting or candidacy rules in the current election notice.

State

Luxembourg is a sovereign, independent parliamentary democracy and constitutional monarchy. The Constitution, in force in its current form since 1 July 2023, is the highest legal norm and protects fundamental rights, the rule of law and the separation of powers. State authority operates through the Grand Duke, the Government, the Chambre des Députés, the courts, public administrations and communes.

Elections

Elections in Luxembourg choose representatives at legislative, European and communal level. Legislative elections elect 60 members of the Chamber of Deputies, European elections elect 6 Members of the European Parliament, and communal elections elect local council members. Voting uses secret ballots and proportional systems for legislative and European elections, while communal rules depend on the commune's population. Eligibility, registration, postal voting, candidacy, counting and government formation follow the amended electoral law and election-specific notices.
