The Guyana Labour Force Survey defines unemployment by all three conditions: no employment, recent job search and current availability for work. In the fourth quarter of 2025, the rate was 8.7% for women and 4.5% for men, 6.6% in rural areas and 5.1% in urban areas. Young people aged 15 to 24 had a rate of 12.6%, with 11,056 unemployed young people. Among unemployed young people, 57.4% had been without work for up to six months and 27% for more than twelve months; among adults, the corresponding figures were 45.7% and 36.6%. These figures describe the labour force and do not include every person who wants work but has stopped searching. The survey recorded 8,833 discouraged job seekers, equal to 2.9% of the inactive working-age population, and a potential labour force of 36,721 people, equal to 4.8% of the working-age population.
Unemployment in Guyana
In Guyana, an unemployed person aged 15 or older has no job, has recently looked for work and is currently available to work. The unemployment rate was 6.2% in the fourth quarter of 2025, representing 27,849 unemployed people. Guyana does not currently list a contribution-based unemployment benefit in the National Insurance Scheme catalogue, so job placement and means-tested assistance serve different purposes.
