Nature in Guyana

Guyana contains four broad natural regions, including the coastal plain, the hilly sand and clay region, the hinterland forest and the Rupununi Savannah. Forest covers about 85–87% of the country, while rivers, wetlands, mangroves, savannas and the Guiana Shield support high biodiversity and endemism. The National Protected Areas System, abbreviated NPAS, protects selected landscapes through government, international, Indigenous and community-based management. Hunting, fishing, forestry, mining, tourism and conservation are governed by location-specific rules, permits and management plans.
