Language in Guyana

English is Guyana’s official language and the usual language of government, law, Parliament and schooling. Guyanese Creolese is an English-lexified language with its own grammar and syntax and is widely used in everyday life. Indigenous languages remain central to identity and participation in Amerindian communities, while Portuguese, Spanish, Haitian Creole, Mandarin, Cantonese and other household languages also occur.
