The University of Guyana (UG) offers certificates, diplomas, associate degrees, bachelor’s degrees, postgraduate diplomas, master’s degrees and PhDs through nine faculties. Study may be face-to-face, online or blended at Turkeyen, Berbice and other regional locations. The UWI Open Campus provides another regional option with virtual and physical delivery, while other local providers may offer programmes if they hold valid registration or accreditation under the National Accreditation Council of Guyana (NAC). The NAC register should be checked because institutional recognition does not automatically mean that every programme is accredited. Admission requirements depend on the qualification. A general UG degree usually requires at least five CXC or CSEC General Proficiency passes, or GCE O-Level passes, including English Language and any programme-specific Mathematics or other subjects. Some applicants may qualify through GCE Advanced Level combinations. UG commonly requires applicants to be at least 16 in the admission year. Mature entry may be available from age 26 and can involve an entrance examination or foundation course. Certificate, diploma and associate programmes often require five relevant GCE O-Level or CXC/CSEC passes, including English Language and Mathematics, but the programme rules take priority. Graduate programmes generally require a bachelor’s degree or equivalent and may also require a minimum classification, transcripts, references, a statement, a CV or work experience. Applicants normally use the provider’s online portal, select a programme, submit results or transcripts and provide supporting documents. An application fee may apply. UG may allow provisional acceptance when examination results are still pending. Deadlines, interviews, entrance tests and available places vary by programme. For the 2026/27 cycle, UG published an application window from 30 March to 9 May 2026; future dates can change and should be checked with the institution. Since the 2025/26 academic year, Guyana’s public policy has provided free university tuition for eligible UG study, but eligibility, residency, programme coverage and current additional charges must be confirmed. Students may still need to pay for applications, books, devices, internet access, transport, accommodation, living costs and field, laboratory or professional expenses. Other providers set their own tuition and fees. GOAL scholarships can support eligible resident Guyanese through certificate, foundation or GROW, associate, bachelor’s, postgraduate, master’s and PhD pathways with partner institutions. GOAL is a scholarship platform rather than a university or awarding body; awards may include conditions such as mandatory community service. Study normally moves from admission and registration to course selection, credits, assessments and examinations, followed by progression, completion and the award of a transcript or qualification. Each institution sets its own rules for attendance, fees, academic integrity, appeals, deferment, withdrawal and disciplinary matters. Distance or blended study is not automatically fully online because examinations, tutorials, practical work, laboratories or fieldwork may require physical attendance. Internet and suitable device access can also be necessary. Before enrolling, check the provider, the specific programme, the awarding institution and the NAC status. Foreign and online qualifications are not automatically treated as locally equivalent. Employers, postgraduate providers and professional bodies may apply additional recognition or licensing requirements, especially in regulated professions. Credit transfer is decided by the receiving institution and is not guaranteed nationally. Completing tertiary study does not itself guarantee employment, a professional licence or a post-study immigration or employment right.
Study in Guyana
Tertiary study in Guyana leads through a university, college or equivalent institution to a recognised certificate, diploma, associate degree, bachelor’s degree, master’s degree or doctorate. The University of Guyana is the main national provider, alongside other registered institutions and regional or online options. Admission, recognition, costs and progression depend on the institution and programme.
Tip
Choose the provider and qualification by the outcome you need, not only by delivery format or advertised funding. Confirm admission, recognition, total costs and physical attendance requirements before submitting an application or relying on an online route. If you may use GOAL or free UG tuition, verify your personal and programme eligibility rather than treating either option as automatic.
