Special arrangements before vocational training in Germany

If you cannot spend as much time at your training company during vocational training in Germany, you can agree on part-time vocational training with the company; this makes the program longer. If your training place is abroad, the rules of the country concerned apply. An alternative route to a first vocational qualification may be available even if you did not enter vocational training through the usual route.

Tip

Choose part-time training, training abroad, or a later entry route according to your available time, career goal, and work history. Before committing, clarify the effects on the training period, qualification, and its recognition in Germany.

International applicants

People coming from abroad who begin school-based vocational training in Germany may qualify for BAföG under certain conditions. Eligibility depends on whether the type of school qualifies, personal circumstances and, for foreign nationals, residence status. For company-based training, vocational training assistance is usually the relevant support instead of BAföG.

Part-time training

Dual vocational training in Germany can be completed by mutual agreement on a part-time basis. Daily or weekly training hours may be reduced by no more than 50 percent; the training period becomes longer accordingly. Eligibility for BAföG or other support depends mainly on whether the training is company-based or school-based.

Second-chance education

Not having a school-leaving qualification, or having a lower one, does not automatically prevent access to dual vocational training in Germany: the law does not require a specific school qualification for it. Companies select applicants themselves; school-based training programs and individual occupations may require their own evidence of eligibility.
