In part-time vocational training (Teilzeitausbildung), the trainee and training provider agree on shorter daily or weekly training hours. The hours may be reduced by no more than 50 percent; the total duration is extended accordingly. The part-time arrangement must be agreed with the provider, so it is not automatically suitable for every training place or schedule. Child benefit can generally be paid during vocational training until the 25th birthday. A part-time arrangement does not by itself rule out eligibility just because the training hours are shorter. What matters is that the training is actually taking place and the other requirements are met. After a first vocational qualification or first degree has been completed, employment may affect eligibility; special limits apply to work alongside further training. Check your specific circumstances with the Family Benefits Office (Familienkasse), especially if you already have a vocational qualification or plan to work alongside your training.
Part-time vocational training in Germany
Part-time vocational training can reduce the weekly workload but usually extends the training period. Child benefit can generally continue during recognised vocational training for a child under 25. Additional limits on employment apply after the first vocational qualification has been completed.
Tip
Before agreeing, check whether the training provider will put the part-time arrangement in the contract and whether the longer training period fits your plans. Check child benefit eligibility with the Family Benefits Office, especially if you have already completed vocational training or plan to work alongside it.
