Schools in Germany

School attendance is compulsory in Germany. Children first attend primary school and then move on to a secondary school. The federal states regulate the starting age, duration, and details. At primary school, children mainly learn reading, writing, mathematics, and general studies. They often also have physical education, music, art, and early foreign-language lessons. Teachers also observe how independently and cooperatively the children learn. The types of secondary school differ between the federal states. Common names include Hauptschule, Realschule, Gymnasium, and Gesamtschule. Some states combine several educational tracks in one school under other names. Different school types lead to different qualifications. These may enable entry into vocational training or lead to a higher-education entrance qualification. The Abitur generally provides access to study at a higher-education institution. It may be possible to change school types or educational tracks. Performance, learning progress, and the rules of the relevant federal state usually matter. Many school qualifications can also be earned later at vocational schools or through second-chance education. Classes follow timetables, curricula, and set school holidays. Performance is assessed through class participation, written work, exams, and other tasks. Report cards regularly record progress. Public schools are the usual route and are run by the state. Private schools also exist and must meet state requirements and be recognized or approved. Schools may offer special focuses such as languages, science, music, or sports. School offers opportunities to gain knowledge, make friends, and take part in society. At the same time, the type of school, pace of learning, and support do not always suit every child straight away. Talking with teachers and advice services can help identify suitable options and support.
