Crime in Denmark

The Danish police are called Politi and receive reports, protect people, investigate suspected offences, and maintain public order. Prosecutors decide how criminal cases proceed, and independent courts determine guilt and penalties. People should call 112 when a crime is happening and someone, property, or the public is in immediate danger. Crimes that are no longer in progress are normally reported through non-emergency police channels or an available reporting service. Common practical concerns include bicycle theft, theft of bags or phones, burglary, vandalism, threats, violence, and fraud. Risk varies by place and situation, so ordinary care is more useful than assuming that every area is either completely safe or dangerous. Digital crime can involve false messages, fake shops, account theft, payment fraud, romance scams, or someone pretending to represent a bank or authority. Unexpected urgency, secrecy, unusual payment requests, and demands for login information are warning signs. After a crime, personal safety comes first. A victim or witness should move to a safe place, seek medical help if needed, preserve messages or other evidence, note what happened, and report the event through the appropriate channel. A police report does not guarantee that property will be recovered or that a suspect will be charged. Available evidence, legal requirements, the seriousness of the event, and investigative possibilities influence what happens next. Victims may need more than a criminal investigation. Health services, municipalities, shelters, insurers, employers, schools, and victim-support organizations may assist with injury, trauma, housing, documentation, or practical recovery. Prevention works best when it is simple and consistent. Locking bicycles properly, protecting digital accounts, checking payment requests, securing the home, planning safe travel, and speaking up early can reduce harm without placing blame on victims.
