Schools provide the formal education pathway from preschool through primary and secondary school. Under the Education (Amendment) Act 2024, parents or guardians must ensure regular and punctual attendance from age 5 until age 16. State and government-assisted primary and secondary schools charge no general fees, while private schools set their own charges. Apprenticeships combine workplace learning with occupational training. The Education and Training Act 2010 covers apprenticeships in designated trades, which may lead to a Belize National Vocational Qualification. The national apprenticeship system remains fragmented and under development, with current development efforts focusing particularly on livestock rearing and construction. Language learning supports school, work and daily communication. English is Belize's official language and language of instruction, while Spanish and Belizean Creole are also widely used. The 2022 Census recorded English speakers at 75.5%, Spanish speakers at 54.0% and Creole speakers at 49.0%; people could report more than one language. Courses and practice are available through schools, university programmes, private providers, workplaces and Indigenous communities. Tertiary study means education after secondary school or an equivalent qualification. Universities, junior colleges and other recognised post-secondary institutions offer Associate, Bachelor and Master degrees. The University of Belize, Galen University and UWI Global Campus Belize are examples of providers, but admission, fees, credit transfer and recognition depend on the institution and programme. Adult and continuing education and skills development cover academic learning, vocational preparation, practical life skills and professional development. Technical and vocational programmes provide practice-oriented qualifications, while the University of Belize and other organisations offer course-based programmes. Teacher development and tourism training are additional examples. Belize has no nationwide unified portal, general entitlement to a course or uniform fee schedule, so the provider must be checked for entry rules, costs, schedule and recognition.
Learning in Belize
Learning in Belize includes school education, apprenticeships, language learning, tertiary study and adult skills development. These routes differ in purpose, age range, entry requirements and the institutions that provide them. School attendance is compulsory from ages 5 to 16, while further education and training depend on the chosen programme and provider.
Tip
Choose the learning route in Belize by the result you need: school education, an occupational qualification, stronger language skills, a degree or practical adult training. Compare the provider's entry rules, total fees, schedule and recognition before committing, especially because further education and skills programmes do not follow one national portal or fee system.
