Elections in Belarus

Elections in Belarus formally allow citizens to choose the president, members of the House of Representatives, and local councils. The country also uses indirect selection for part of parliament and may hold national referendums. In practice, political restrictions and weaknesses in independent oversight seriously limit genuine electoral competition.

Tip

If you plan to vote in Belarus, verify your voter-list entry and polling location through the appropriate election body. Review candidates and referendum wording carefully, and do not assume that official procedure ensures equal competition. Document any procedural problem factually and consider the sensitivity of election-related activity.
