Communication in Malta

Communication in Malta commonly uses Maltese and English. Maltese is Malta's national language and one of its official languages, while English is also official and code-switching is common. Maltese Sign Language (LSM, Lingwa tas-Sinjali Maltija) has been an official language since 2016. Telephone, postal, digital-government and public-authority communication each have different providers, complaint channels and accessibility arrangements.

Tip

Choose the communication channel in Malta according to the problem and the responsible provider or institution. Keep written records, start with the first responsible contact, and escalate only when that contact has not resolved the issue or cannot handle it. Arrange LSM interpretation or another suitable support early when language or accessibility creates a barrier.
