Study in Zimbabwe

Zimbabwe’s higher education system includes State Universities, Private Universities, Intergovernmental Institutions, Polytechnic Colleges and Teachers’ Colleges. The Ministry of Higher and Tertiary Education, Innovation, Science and Technology Development coordinates policy, state universities, funding and higher-education planning. The Zimbabwe Council for Higher Education, known as ZIMCHE, registers degree-granting institutions, accredits programmes, conducts quality audits and assesses foreign qualifications. An institution and its specific programme should both be checked because institutional registration alone does not prove that every programme is accredited. Qualifications follow the Zimbabwe National Qualifications Framework, or ZNQF. Certificates are generally at Level 4, Diplomas and National Diplomas at Level 5, Higher National Diplomas at Level 6, general Bachelor’s Degrees at Level 7 and Honours Bachelor’s Degrees at Level 8. Postgraduate certificates and diplomas and Master’s degrees are at Level 9, while Doctoral Degrees are at Level 10. ZNQF level does not automatically state the number of years required. Zimbabwe’s credit system, ZIMCATS, supports credit accumulation and transfer, but each institution decides whether it accepts particular credits. A Bachelor’s programme normally carries at least 120 credits per academic year, roughly 30 teaching weeks or two semesters. One credit is commonly based on about 10 hours of study. A Master’s programme may use about 180 credits in a full-time academic year, although duration and structure vary by institution and programme. Study can be conventional and campus-based, arranged through block release, offered at weekends or run as a parallel programme. Open and distance learning, or ODeL, combines guided study with digital, tutorial and sometimes face-to-face support. Zimbabwe Open University is a state ODeL institution with regional centres in all 10 provinces and a Virtual Region, offering certificate, diploma, undergraduate and postgraduate programmes. Admission requirements depend on the programme. A common minimum is five O’ Level passes including English. Many degree programmes additionally require two relevant A’ Level passes. Mathematics may be required for particular subjects or institutions. ZIMSEC, Cambridge and equivalent qualifications may be accepted under the relevant rules. National Diploma, Higher National Diploma or another recognized tertiary qualification may support Special Entry or advanced standing. Some institutions also provide Mature Entry, but age, work experience, subject combinations, grades and selection rules vary. Meeting the published minimum does not guarantee admission where places are limited. Applications are normally submitted directly through an institution’s portal or form, and each institution sets its own deadlines and intakes. For example, the University of Zimbabwe has published one undergraduate intake in August with applications typically opening between January and March. There is no single national tuition fee. Institutions charge in United States dollars, Zimbabwe Gold or another permitted form according to programme, faculty, study level, levies and student status. Published examples illustrate the range rather than a universal price: the University of Zimbabwe has listed an application fee of US$30 for Zimbabweans and US$50 for international applicants; the National University of Science and Technology published undergraduate charges from US$600 to US$780 including levies from 1 January 2025, with additional special levies; and Zimbabwe Open University published a semester fee of US$1,156 for international undergraduate students taking four courses and US$500 plus levies for external Zimbabwean or SADC students taking four courses. Housing, living costs, transport, learning materials and other charges may be separate. Current fee notices from the chosen institution control the actual amount. Funding is not provided through one universal tuition scheme. The National Scholarship Department in the Office of the President and Cabinet administers scholarship opportunities, while the Ministry may publish international scholarship calls. Some institutions, banks and Eduloan may offer funding at particular times. The Zimbabwe Manpower Development Fund, or ZIMDEF, mainly supports institutional development, equipment, innovation and industrial attachment allowances rather than providing a general tuition grant to every student. Regulated professions may also require registration with the relevant professional council after graduation. Foreign qualifications may need a ZIMCHE assessment for employment, further study or professional purposes.
