Living in Yemen

Yemen lies in the south of the Arabian Peninsula, on the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden; the country also includes the Socotra archipelago. Around 28.5 million people live there. The landscape ranges from dry coastal plains and deserts to fertile highland valleys. The mountains are generally milder and cool in winter, while the coast is hot and sometimes humid, and the east remains very dry. Many people live in cities such as Sana’a in multi-story houses; in rural areas, people also live in houses made of stone or mud. Agriculture, trade, crafts, and services play an important role in daily life. Shared taxis and buses connect places, while water and electricity supplies vary considerably by region.
