Language in Yemen

Arabic is Yemen's only official state language and the main language of administration, education, justice, public information and media. Modern Standard Arabic, also called Fuṣḥá, is used in formal and written settings, while Yemeni Arabic varieties are used in everyday conversation. Mehri and Soqotri remain important local languages, especially in Al Mahrah and Socotra, but they have no established nationwide official status.

Tip

Use Arabic for formal dealings in Yemen, including administration, education, examinations, public services and official information. Use the local Yemeni variety that your conversation partners understand for everyday interaction, and treat Mehri or Soqotri as community and cultural languages rather than assuming they are accepted for official documents or services. English can support education but does not replace Arabic in the formal route.
