Insurance is a contract that provides financial support after a covered event, in exchange for contributions or premiums. It does not pay for every problem, and the policy wording is central. Vietnam has public social insurance, called bảo hiểm xã hội or BHXH. It can support areas such as sickness, maternity, work-related protection, retirement, and survivor benefits under the applicable system. Public health insurance is bảo hiểm y tế, commonly shortened to BHYT. It helps cover eligible medical care through the public health insurance system, subject to the relevant registration, provider, treatment, and claim conditions. Unemployment insurance is bảo hiểm thất nghiệp, or BHTN. It is connected mainly with eligible employment relationships and can provide support and employment-related services when the required conditions are met. Employers and employees may share compulsory social and health insurance contributions for eligible employment. Self-employed people, family members, and others may use different participation routes. Private insurance can add protection for health, life, accidents, travel, vehicles, homes, or business assets. It may offer broader services, but it can also contain exclusions, waiting periods, limits, deductibles, and claim procedures. A claim usually requires timely notice, identity information, medical or incident records, receipts, and proof that the event is covered. Missing documents or failing to follow the policy process can delay or reduce payment. Insurance is useful for risks that would seriously harm your household or business. Compare the covered risk, exclusions, limit, contribution, renewal conditions, and claims support before buying.
Insurance in Vietnam
Insurance in Vietnam helps people and businesses share the cost of illness, accidents, disability, property damage, and other risks. The local system includes public social and health insurance, employment-related protection, and private policies. The right choice depends on who is covered, which event is insured, what documents are needed, and what the policy excludes.
Tip
First check which public insurance protection you already receive in Vietnam through work, household participation, or another route. Then cover the biggest remaining financial risks, especially medical costs, loss of income, dependants, and essential property. Store policy documents where your family can find them during an emergency.
