Nature in United Arab Emirates

The United Arab Emirates has a hot, dry natural environment. Rain is limited and irregular, so water strongly shapes where plants, animals, and people can live. Deserts cover much of the country, but they are not empty. Dunes, gravel plains, and salt flats provide habitats for insects, reptiles, birds, and mammals that avoid heat or conserve water. The Hajar Mountains in the east create a different landscape. Rocky slopes and valleys called wadis can hold pools or carry sudden floodwater after rain, even when nearby skies appear clear. Wildlife is adapted to demanding conditions. Activity often increases at night or during cooler seasons, while migration makes the country an important resting and feeding area for many birds. Protected areas on land and at sea help conserve habitats and vulnerable species. Access rules differ because some places allow recreation while others need quiet zones, seasonal protection, or official permission. Nature faces pressure from construction, disturbance, litter, off-road driving, water demand, invasive species, and climate change. Conservation works best when habitat protection, careful development, scientific monitoring, and responsible visitor behavior support one another. Nature also offers recreation, education, cleaner air, coastal protection, and a sense of place.
