Labor law in United Arab Emirates

Labor law in the United Arab Emirates covers the relationship between an employer and an employee. It regulates hiring, employment conditions, workplace duties, and the end of the relationship. Most private-sector employment is governed by the federal labor framework and supervised by the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation, commonly called MOHRE. Government employees and domestic workers have different frameworks. The Dubai International Financial Centre, known as DIFC, and Abu Dhabi Global Market, known as ADGM, have their own employment systems. A worker must therefore identify both the employer’s location and the legal system named in the contract. A written employment contract usually records the job, wage, workplace, working arrangements, and notice conditions. The official registered contract is especially important when a separate offer letter or company policy says something different. Employment rules also address wages, working time, rest, leave, workplace safety, discrimination, harassment, and disciplinary action. Some rights are minimum protections and cannot simply be removed by agreement. Employment may end through resignation, dismissal, expiry, or mutual agreement. Notice, final wages, unused entitlements, end-of-service benefits, immigration cancellation, and return of company property commonly form part of the exit process. A workplace problem is often raised first with the employer or human-resources team. If it remains unresolved, the worker may approach MOHRE or the relevant free-zone or public-sector authority before a claim proceeds to the competent court. Evidence matters in employment disputes. Contracts, wage records, messages, warnings, leave approvals, and termination documents can show what was agreed and what happened.
