History in United Arab Emirates

People have lived in the area of the present United Arab Emirates since ancient times. Archaeological remains show long histories of settlement, trade, herding, farming, craftwork, and seafaring. Geography shaped daily life. Mountains supplied routes and water sources, oases supported date farming, the desert supported mobile pastoral life, and coastal communities relied on fishing, trade, and pearling. Tribes, families, and local rulers organized political and social relationships. Alliances and rivalries changed over time, and each emirate developed its own history and ruling house. Ports linked the region with Arabia, Persia, India, East Africa, and wider trading networks. Goods, sailors, merchants, languages, and ideas moved through these connections. Pearling became a major livelihood for many coastal communities before cultured pearls and global economic changes weakened the industry. Its difficult diving seasons remain an important part of collective memory. During the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, agreements with Britain shaped the coastal sheikhdoms commonly known as the Trucial States. Britain managed important external matters, while local rulers retained authority within their sheikhdoms. After Britain announced its withdrawal, six emirates created the United Arab Emirates in 1971. Ras Al Khaimah joined in 1972, completing the federation of seven emirates. Oil income helped fund infrastructure, education, health care, housing, and new institutions, although development differed by emirate. Trade, aviation, tourism, finance, industry, and international migration later broadened the economy and transformed cities. Historical memory now lives in museums, forts, archaeological sites, oral histories, poetry, crafts, boats, and national commemorations.
