Traditions in Tuvalu

Traditions in Tuvalu include inherited practices, performances, family customs, ceremonies, clothing, crafts and shared ways of organising island life. They vary across the nine islands and atolls, so a practice from Funafuti may differ from one in Nanumea, Vaitupu or Nui. Family, community and island relationships shape how traditions are learned, practised and passed on.

Tip

Treat a Tuvaluan tradition as island- and community-specific unless local people confirm that it is shared more widely. The safest approach is to identify the relevant family, Elders, tufuga, Falekaupule or Kaupule, follow local protocol, and obtain consent before recording or publishing cultural knowledge.
