Pets in Tuvalu

Pets in Tuvalu are kept mainly through private and informal arrangements, while formal controls are strongest for dogs and imported animals. A dog generally requires annual registration from six months, a collar or badge, a leash in its compound and public spaces, and a maximum of two dogs per dwelling. Importing a dog or cat requires advance biosecurity permission and inspection, while veterinary access and formal rehoming services remain limited or undocumented.

Tip

Treat pet ownership in Tuvalu as a local planning decision rather than a standard service package. Confirm dog-control duties, veterinary access, travel permissions and realistic arrangements for illness or relinquishment before taking an animal, especially when care will be needed outside Funafuti.
