Surroundings in Tuvalu

Everyday surroundings in Tuvalu are shaped by homes and public infrastructure, freshwater and sanitation, coastal exposure, waste, green and communal spaces, safety systems and opportunities to participate in local decisions. Funafuti, especially Fongafale, faces the strongest pressure from density, scarce land, flooding, erosion, heat and saltwater, while services and infrastructure vary across the outer islands. National programmes and donor-supported projects address these conditions, but planned measures are not automatically available everywhere or already operating.

Tip

Treat local conditions as island-specific rather than assuming that a national service is available in the same form everywhere in Tuvalu. For a home, project or daily routine, check coastal exposure, heat, water continuity, sanitation, power, emergency access and waste conditions together. Treat planned climate and infrastructure measures as potential support, not as a service you can rely on until their local availability is confirmed.
