Politics in Turkey

Politics in Turkey concerns how public power is organized, exercised and contested through state institutions and elections. The state framework includes the Grand National Assembly of Türkiye, the President, courts, public administration and municipalities. Elections determine representation and leadership at national and local levels, while the Supreme Election Council, known as YSK, administers the electoral process.

Tip

Use the institution and decision level to determine how to handle a political matter in Turkey. Separate a national issue from a municipal, administrative or court matter, and do not treat an election result as a substitute for the procedure handled by the responsible public institution.

State

The state system of the Republic of Türkiye is a unitary constitutional republic with elected national institutions and public administration across provinces and districts. The Grand National Assembly of Türkiye makes laws, the President leads the executive branch, and courts exercise judicial power. Citizens meet the state through public services, documents, taxes, courts, municipalities, and elections.

Elections

Elections in the Republic of Türkiye allow citizens to choose national representatives, the President, and local officials through secret ballots. National elections involve the presidency and the Grand National Assembly of Türkiye, while local elections choose mayors, councils, and other local representatives. The Supreme Election Council, known as YSK, coordinates and supervises the election process.
