Living together in Turkey

Living together in the Republic of Türkiye is organized through family networks, neighborhoods, workplaces, schools, municipalities, associations, and shared public spaces. Ideas such as komşuluk, meaning neighborly relations, mahalle, meaning neighborhood, and hemşehri, meaning a person from the same hometown or region, help explain social connection. Cooperation is common, but differences in class, region, belief, gender, generation, and politics also shape daily life.

Tip

Build a place-based network in the Republic of Türkiye by learning your mahalle, greeting neighbors, and identifying one formal service and one trusted informal contact. Offer small, reliable help without promising more than you can give. Keep written agreements and personal boundaries when friendship or family networks overlap with money, housing, work, or care.
