Living in Tunisia

Tunisia lies in northern Africa between the Mediterranean Sea, Algeria and Libya; around 11.6 million people live there. The country stretches from fertile plains and wooded hills in the north, across dry steppes, to the Sahara in the south. Along the coast, winters are usually mild and humid and summers hot, while inland areas are drier and the desert regions considerably hotter. Many people live in cities and suburbs; in smaller towns, they often live in houses with courtyards. In everyday life, family visits, markets, cafés and shared meals play an important role. In Tunis and the coastal cities, offices, commerce and heavy traffic shape daily life; inland, distances are greater, and agriculture and local services are more important.
