Languages in Trinidad and Tobago

English, especially Standard English, is the central language of education and work communication in Trinidad and Tobago. Trinidadian and Tobagonian English Creoles are widely used in everyday life and are recognised as resources for learning Standard English. Spanish is the main foreign language promoted nationally, while French, Chinese, German, Hindi, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, Yoruba and sign languages are available through selected programmes.

Tip

Choose a learning option by the result you need: formal school or university access, a CXC qualification, reading and writing for daily life, workplace communication, a foreign language or sign-language skills. Check the provider's current entry rules, timetable, fees and accepted certificates before committing. Do not assume that a course certificate is nationally recognised or that a foreign language is required for every school or job.
