School in Trinidad and Tobago

School education in Trinidad and Tobago runs from Early Childhood Care and Education (ECCE) at about ages 3–4 through primary and secondary school. Primary school usually covers ages 5–11 in Infant 1–2 and Standard 1–5, while regular secondary school covers Forms 1–5 from about ages 12–16. Government and government-assisted schools do not charge registration fees, whereas private schools set their own fees. Attendance is compulsory from ages 5 to 16, subject to legal exceptions and approved home or other instruction.

Tip

Choose the school pathway by the child’s age, learning needs, location, available place and intended progression, then confirm the requirements with the responsible school or education office. Government or government-assisted schooling can reduce entry costs, while private or special provision may fit better when its teaching model or support matches the child’s situation. Treat admission, SEA placement, grants, learning support and examination choices as separate decisions because one does not settle the others.
