Study in Trinidad and Tobago

Higher education in Trinidad and Tobago is provided through Tertiary Level Institutions, commonly called TLIs. Programmes may be academic or applied and can lead to a Certificate, Diploma, Associate Degree, Bachelor or Baccalaureate, Postgraduate Diploma, Master, MPhil or PhD. Study fields include engineering, food and agriculture, humanities and education, law, medical sciences, science and technology, social sciences, sport, business, computing, nursing and maritime studies. Public TLIs include The University of the West Indies, St. Augustine, the University of Trinidad and Tobago and COSTAATT. Private providers include the University of the Southern Caribbean, SBCS and ROYTEC. UWI Open Campus provides regional study options. Each institution decides its programme offering, curriculum, admission process, assessment rules, academic calendar and graduation requirements. Many programmes consider CSEC or CXC qualifications, GCE O-Level results, or equivalent international credentials. A common requirement is at least five passes, often including English Language and Mathematics. UWI undergraduate matriculation commonly requires five subjects and at least two CAPE or GCE A-Level subjects, or six CAPE units including Caribbean Studies and Communication Studies. Faculties may require specific subjects, grades or a competitive GPA. An Associate Degree, previous tertiary study or another recognized qualification may provide an alternative basis for admission. Applications are usually submitted online with certified certificates, examination results, transcripts and any required identification or supporting documents. English-language evidence may be required, including an institutional English test, TOEFL or IELTS. Mature-student arrangements depend on the institution and programme; UWI generally considers applicants aged at least 21 who have been outside secondary school for at least five years. Tuition is charged in Trinidad and Tobago dollars and varies by institution, programme, study load and the number of credits taken. Students may also pay compulsory institutional fees and budget for books, materials, accommodation and transport. Full-time and part-time study can have different payment schedules. Current amounts and payment plans should be checked in the institution's fee booklet or official finance information. The Government Assistance for Tuition Expenses programme, known as GATE, can support eligible Trinidad and Tobago citizens who have at least three years of continuous residence, are aged 18 to 50, and attend an approved institution and programme. Eligibility also depends on academic performance, a means test and the applicable policy. Funding is limited to the approved programme duration, and some awards may carry a national-service bond. The Higher Education Loan Programme, known as HELP, generally covers applicants aged 18 to 50 with at least three years of residence who attend an Accreditation Council of Trinidad and Tobago-approved institution and programme. HELP also depends on the current income threshold and may cover tuition, accommodation, airfare and transport, subject to policy limits of up to TT$35,000 per year locally or TT$75,000 regionally. Study normally follows a semester and credit system. Students apply, register for courses, meet attendance and academic requirements, complete assessments and examinations, and satisfy the institution's graduation rules. Academic advising, admissions offices, careers or placement services, student services, libraries, campus facilities and accommodation services can support this process. UWI operates across eight faculties. UTT also offers study-related access support through bridging provision and U-STEP. The Accreditation Council of Trinidad and Tobago, or ACTT, handles registration, accreditation, programme approval, recognition and the use of academic titles. Registration of an institution does not automatically prove that every programme is accredited. Students should check both the institution's status and the specific programme approval or recognition where this affects further study, employment or professional practice. The Ministry of Tertiary Education and Skills Training oversees the national tertiary education framework, while the Funding and Grants Administration Division administers GATE and HELP. In Tobago, the Division of Education, Innovation and Energy of the Tobago House of Assembly has relevant responsibilities.
