Health in Trinidad and Tobago

Health services in Trinidad and Tobago combine public primary care, hospitals, community programmes and private providers. The Ministry of Health sets policy, while five Regional Health Authorities deliver most public services through Health Centres, District Health Facilities and hospitals. Health Centres provide prevention, treatment of common illnesses, chronic care, mental-health support and referrals; 24-hour District Health Facilities and hospital Accident and Emergency departments provide higher-level and emergency care. Public healthcare is provided without charge under the Ministry of Health's stated policy, while private treatment, medicines and some specialist arrangements may require out-of-pocket payment.

Tip

Use a nearby Health Centre for routine care, prevention, chronic conditions, maternal and child services, vaccinations and non-urgent mental-health support. Choose a District Health Facility or hospital when you need 24-hour assessment or emergency treatment, and use 811 for an ambulance in a life-threatening situation. Check opening hours, referral arrangements and possible private costs before travelling or committing to treatment.
